Thierry Feuz in Taipei

Bluerider ART brought the exhibition Neo-Baroque. It is a two-city exhibition which was shown in Shanghai and Taipei. It is a solo exhibition of the artist Thierry Feuz. Born in Vienna in 1968, Thierry Feuz received a MA from University of Art and Design Vienna and now works in city of Vienna and Geneva.

Neo-Baroque shows the romantic sentiment in Feuz’s ouevre and the artist’s unique synthesis of diverse painting techniques. ‘Baroque’ refers to an extravagant and romantic style popular in the 17th century Europe.

In terms of Feuz’s painting, the extravagance could be found in the exuberant conglomeration of fresh flowers; in the rich and vivid color palette; and in the artist’s free yet sophisticated application of painting techniques, ranging from drip painting, spray painting, painting with glitter and enamel, and painting with non-dissovling mediums. Of course, the subject of flower is commonly connected to nature and romance.

Shown in the center of the Taipei gallery are two paintings from the latest series “Hyperboreal”. In the foregrounds, the flowers and butterflies oscillate between an abstract and a figurative representation. The background is a blend of colors that resembles swirls of clouds on a windy day. The electric blue and violet color echos to the radiating yellow. The series aims to show the idea of light and the power of life and Feuz does so by creating a dynamic composition using a vivid color palette.

I appreciate the vivid energy portrayed in the Hyperborreal series but am more fond of those softer paintings in the gallery.

A painting from the Psychotropical series Blossom Frost Agartha (2021) is hung next to the Hyperboreal paintings. Blossom Frost Agartha (2021) features strands of flowers gracefully floating among a mystic lilac backdrop. Like other works in the Psychotropical series, Blossom Frost Agartha is meant to portray a narcotic state.

The artist’s sophisticated artisanal skills and baroque sentiment create a unique pictorial language that is visually strong yet metaphorically gentle. The floral dreamlike landscapes create a rich and unforgettable visual experience.
